Amazon will soon bring us a much-anticipated Lord of the Rings series set in the Second Age.  We don’t know how soon.  But, they’re also working another Middle Earth storytelling angle.  Amazon Game Studios announced Wednesday that they’re co-developing a Lord of the Rings massively multiplayer online (MMO) game centered around the Second Age!

Athlon Games (owned by Leyou) will be Amazon’s partner in the development of the new game.  Since the Second Age is a time before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s LotR novels it will not venture into the territory of Lord of the Rings Online.  Engadget hypothesized in their reporting that the use of the Second Age as a setting for the new game is for that very reason.  In fact, in a statement Athlon confirmed that the game will be set “at a time long before the events of The Lord of the Rings.”  But, this game will not have anything to do with the Amazon series.  The Second Age is, apparently, the only thing the two projects have in common.

The new LotR MMO game will be free to play and available on PC’s and consoles.  There is no word on how long we have to wait for the release.  Our hunch is that we’ll get the series first.
