Greetings, friends, and welcome to Mobile Game Monday, where we chat about games you can play on the go. If you like to game on a phone or tablet, this is the place for you. Join us every week as we go on all sorts of adventures.

For some, school is starting back up, and the holidays are right around the corner, especially if you’re an early prepper. All of this can be incredibly stressful, so let’s slow things down a bit. Just sit back, relax and join me for Alto’s Odyssey.

Alto’s Odyssey

Released in 2018, Alto’s Odyssey is an endless sandboarding game from Snowman and Noodlecake Studios. It is the sequel to Alto’s Adventure, which featured in a previous Mobile Game Monday. No worries if you haven’t played the first game; Alto’s Odyssey is a standalone adventure. However, I seriously recommend you try them both.

Gameplay and Controls

Play as Alto as you sandboard through one breathtaking level after another. Glide through an ever-changing desert while avoiding dangerous obstacles. Windswept dunes, perilous canyons and long-lost temples are just some of the sights to see. Try something new, like bouncing off hot air balloons or wall-riding over a canyon.

Pick up helpful items like the lotus flower, which lets you break through rocks, or the magnet, which draws coins toward you. Then, use those coins to unlock and upgrade abilities. You can also unlock up to six unique characters, each with special abilities and attributes.

As if the gorgeous level design isn’t enough, every level features dynamic lighting and weather. This means stunning random lightning strikes in the background or a sudden soft rain. Use swirling wind tunnels to shoot high into the sky. While you are up there, soar with the birds, but when you come back down, don’t get caught by a pesky lemur.

The concept and controls for Alto’s Odyssey are easy to learn and fun to master. Once Alto starts moving, tap to jump and hold to start a backflip. All you have to do is jump to avoid obstacles and ensure Alto lands right side up. My only control issue is when trying a wall ride. If you go even slightly too far back, you start a backflip instead, which usually does not end well.

Modes

For an even more laid-back experience, try Zen mode, which has no scores, coins or power-ups. Become one with nature with just you and the never-ending desert. There is even a Photo Mode, which makes sense for a game as visually stunning as this.

Our Adventure Ends Here

The simplicity of Alto’s Odyssey is just one of the reasons I love it so much. It is exactly the relaxing game I need right now. The ambient soundtrack, soothing hues and simple controls make up the chill pill the doctor ordered.

Alto jumps over a large chasm with trees on either side. A large ruin is in the background. A setting sun gives off pinkish purple hues and is surrounding by hot air balloons.

The only thing that would improve this game is some type of multiplayer mode so you can race your friends. I highly recommend Alto’s Odyssey and Alto’s Adventure if you are in the market for a casual experience.
