If there’s one piece of media I’m planning to consume this year that stands a pretty good chance of passing the Bechdel Test, it’s Fun Home. Winner of five 2015 Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, Fun Home is based on Alison Bechdel’s best-selling graphic memoir and follows her through three ages, revealing memories of her uniquely dysfunctional family. The New York Times called it “heart-gripping and cathartic,” which isn’t the same as “fun,” but I’m sure it will be a great time!
I’ll be seeing Fun Home at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Orange County, where it’s playing from August 1 – August 6, 2017. Form there, the national tour moves to San Antonio, TX; Tempe, AZ; Dallas, TX; Greenville, SC; Nashville, TN; Boston, MA; Schenectady, NY; Providence, RI and Tampa, FL. (Probably a list of cities where Bechdel’s comic, “Dykes to Watch Out For,” is the most popular.)

I’ve been excited to see this musical since I heard about it, based largely on how the Bechdel Test has affected my media consumption and my desire to see content that tries harder to represent women well. Bechdel has done more than setting the basic standard for female representation on screen– like making history with this show, the first written exclusively by women to win the Best Musical Tony– and I’m excited to get to experience some of that.
