Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said example to follow.

DISCLAIMER: The following article contains spoilers for Blizzard Entertainment‘s Warcraft franchise and World of Warcraft.

Alexstrasza

Fast Facts:

Alexstrasza (voiced by Wendee Lee) wheres many titles. The Dragon Queen, Life-Binder, She Who Is Life, The Red Leviathan, Aspect of Life and even the Red Aspect. She is the leader of the red Dragonflight and a guardian of Azeroth. The titans chose her as one of the five great dragons to receive their power to rule in their stead and serve as the Queen of the dragons. Throughout the years, Alexstrasza has suffered at the hands of many, including Galakrond, the Burning Legion, the Lich King, Deathwing and many more.

But Alexstrasza never let that stop her from protecting her fellow dragons and children. During the events of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, Alexstrasza stood alongside the other aspects to bring an end to Deathwing’s terror against the people of Azeroth. In the process, she, along with the others, lost their powers. But she still stood as Queen of the dragons and worked to protect Azeroth through the return of the Burning Legion, the raising of Ny’alotha and venturing into the Shadowlands.

In the upcoming expansion, World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, the long-lost Dragon Isles will reawaken and summon the dragons back to their home. From the announcement trailer, we see the return of Alexstrasza as she leads the dragonflights home to face those who wish to take their power once more.

The Real Deal:

Alexastrasza is the real deal. Throughout all of the horror she has faced at the hands of others, she is still compassionate. She still believes that very few beings are truly evil. Even those who are seen as evil in her eyes are still not beyond redemption. Alexstrasza is willing to do everything in her power to keep someone from stepping too far into the darkness. She has always led her fellow dragons with dignity, courage and grace on top of compassion, giving the younger generations a strong role model to learn from.

Without the powers bestowed upon her by the titans, she still stands against Azeroth’s enemies in times of need. When she knew she could die at the hands of an old god, she stepped up to face the terror head-on. And while she may not always lead her fellow dragons into battle, she is always close by, helping lead them with her supreme wisdom.

Why She Matters:

So why does Alexstrasza matter? The Warcraft franchise, most notably World of Warcraft, is packed with lore and well-developed characters. From the MMORPG to the novels, comics and additional side stories, Alexstrasza is one of the most known characters by both players of the Alliance and the Horde. In a game with hundreds of NPCs, she stands out as a strong female character who leads her people. And while she has suffered in her lifetime, she is still compassionate and ready to help others. She isn’t seen as broken or unstable. Alexstrsza is sought out for her wisdom and guidance and is beloved by those she leads. She is a breath of fresh air as gamers demand more strong female characters in their video games.

So, be like Alexstraza. See the good in people, be compassionate, lead yourself with dignity, courage and grace and be a role model for future generations.
