Just when the ink was drying on the paper! According to USA Today, actor Alec Baldwin will NOT be joining the untitled Joker film. This just days after the report that he had been signed on to play one of the most recognizable characters in comics – Thomas Wayne. Turns out Baldwin will not be raising the future hero of Gotham. But his reasoning seems pretty legit.
The site was able to catch up with Baldwin to ask him about the role but he had some bad news. “I’m no longer doing that movie,” he replied, later citing scheduling differences. He also appeared to sort of shrug off the role by further saying “I’m sure there are 25 guys who can play that part”. Yikes. Maybe they can, Baldwin, but they wanted you to play it! But, that’s all she wrote on Alec Baldwin joining the Joker film. So the search continues.

Since the role is opened, speculation will soon be starting up. While I’ve been a fan of Jeffery Dean Morgan playing Thomas in a larger capacity, it would tie the film to the DCEU. Which is something this film is not a part of. According to THR, the role of Thomas Wayne in the script is “a cheesy and tanned businessman who is more in the mold of a 1980s Donald Trump”. Which would make total sense for casting Baldwin, if that’s the direction they’re going in. If that’s the case, I’m less enthused about his inclusion in the story. I don’t want to hate Thomas Wayne. But we’ll have to wait and see who will be filling in!
