Akira Toriyama, DRAGON BALL Creator, Dies at 68

A dark cloud hangs over the anime community today as the official Dragon Ball website announced that beloved manga creator Akira Toriyama passed away at the age of 68. According to the site, he died on March 1 from acute subdural hematoma. 

Akira Toriyama is most famously known as the creator of the Dragon Ball manga series, which later became one of the most internationally recognized anime of all time. Toriyama’s body of work spans almost five decades and countless projects. Just some of his works include Dr. Slump and Sand Land, which has been turned into a video game set to release in April 2024.

He also worked as a character designer for Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger. Several new projects are in the works, including the newest series, Dragon Ball: Daima, which is set to release this fall. It is said by creators that Toriyama was more heavily involved with the development of Daima than other projects.

One of the most influential manga creators of all time, Akira Toriyama inspired generations of people worldwide to be their very best. How many of us as youngsters tried with every ounce of our being to summon a spirit bomb like Goku?

Toriyama created characters that made us laugh and cry and also created a community that felt more like a family. Thank you, Akira Toriyama. I hope you found peace knowing you made so many people happy. I also wish you peace in the afterlife and hope you are watching out for us up there with King Kai. If the dragon balls were real, you better believe we would find them all and bring you right back.
