With Marvel’s long-awaited sixth season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiering next Friday fans have finally been awarded for their patience with the release of a two-minute extended trailer, which follows the release of the official season six poster (see below).
The poster shows all eight of our team members staring dead ahead, with the appearance of what appears to be the recently deceased (again) Phil Coulson. However, fans will already know that it is confirmed that actor Clark Gregg is not reprising his role as the beloved S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, but rather playing a new character entirely, simply named Sarge.
Sarge will make his debut in the season six premiere, which was already screened to a select group of fans when the show’s cast and showrunners attended the Wondercon convention last month. This new extended trailer shows Sarge and his group of baddies wreaking havoc across the cosmos in a large truck with space-age weapons. From voice-over dialogue we can presume this ragtag group travels to parallel universes, a prediction many hardcore fans had already made from the previous trailer. “I know a lot of worlds, some good, some garbage, but I’ve never been to one where people recognise my face”, Sarge says to Agent May (Ming-Na Wen), pretty much confirming the theory that this season will be exploring the multiverse, something which was briefly referred to by Deke (Jeff Ward) in season five.
The way in which Sarge’s character is framed throughout the trailer presents him as the team’s main adversary for the season. We see Sarge mocking May for not being the Coulson she knew and loved, as well as fighting with new S.H.I.E.L.D. director Mack (Henry Simmons), and causing vast amounts of property damage. Whether that is simply true or a McGuffin for an even bigger and currently unknown threat remains to be seen. However, fans will do well to remember that this season will be much shorter than any other previous seasons, with just thirteen episodes.
So what else does this trailer tell us? Well, it appears that our core team has been separated with Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) and Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) out in deep space searching for an estranged and cyro-frozen Fitz (Iain de Caestecker), who does not make an appearance at all in this trailer. Writers may be wanting to keep Fitz’s fate a mystery for now as the mission to locate and retrieve him will be a driving factor in both Jemma’s and Daisy’s storylines.
Grandson Deke however does appear briefly here, providing some much needed light-hearted humour in an otherwise dark and unsettling trailer. We already know a year has past since the events of the season five finale, skipping over the fallout of Avengers: Infinity War, so it remains to be seen what shenanigans he’s been up to.
The trailer opens by making a point of Coulson’s absence and how it will deeply effect each member of the team in different capacities. Glorious CGI shots of colourful space vistas and futuristic spaceships can also be seen, a testament to how much the show’s visuals and aesthetics have improved over the years, accompanied by a haunting rendition of Linkin Park’s ‘In the End’ playing over. All in all, this is a stellar trailer which has sure done its job in generating hype and anticipation for the latest season. We can’t wait to see it!
