AGENTS OF SHIELD Recap: (S05E07) Together or Not At All

Noetta Harjo

Last week’s Agents of SHIELD left fans wanting more….more FitzSimmons that is.  I don’t know about you, but I was definitely cheering when they finally got engaged!   As satisfying that escape was, the trio of FitzSimmons and Daisy the Destroyer have a long way to go.   And what about May?  She was in the fighting pit.  Fitz talked Kasius into sparing her life, but is that really what will happen to her?

In “Together or Not at All” the agents are working to reunite with each other and find their way back to the past.  They are also helping the remaining human population in the process.  With the Kree on their trail, a reunion won’t be an easy feat.

Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), Jemma (Elizabeth Henstridge) and Daisy (Chloe Bennet) are making their escape, but there is one thing they need to take care of first. Kasius (Dominic Rains) put a substance in Jemma’s ear to keep her in line. That substance is causing her to hear a high-pitched noise that is very painful.  Fitz works to get it out of her ear.  Daisy fights off the Kree.  Once Jemma is free, they leave.  As they turn the corner, Fitz sees his getaway ship explode.

Kasius and Sinara (Florence Faivre) both survived the ordeal. Kasius came away with a huge scar on his face, courtesy of Jemma Simmons.  His brother Faulnak (Samuel Roukin) shames Kasius for being so vain. He says that his why he is a disgrace to the family.  Kasius reminds Faulnak that they need to find the Destroyer.  He wants to send Sinara after Daisy, but Faulnak says he has a better warrior.  Manston-Dar (Remington Hoffman)

In the marketplace, the Kree remove Tess’s body. The Kree Vicar (Isaac C. Singleton Jr.) tells everyone that they will suffer the same fate if they don’t turn in the boy…Flint (Coy Stewart).  Flint is still hiding with Elena (Natalia Cordova-Buckley) in Grille’s salvage.  Agents Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Mack (Henry Simmons) return with news about what’s going on.  Flint asks for Tess, but the look on their faces tells him all he needs to know.  Flint is upset that good people are dying because of him.

Daisy and FitzSimmons find an elevator to make their escape, but Manston-Dar catches up with them.  He rips out the wiring in the control panel and the elevator stops.  The agents have to escape through the hatch in the ceiling.

May (Ming-Na Wen) is on the surface of Earth; running for her life from the Vrellnexians.  Enoch (Joel Stoffer) appears and saves May from the attack.  He tells her that Fitz sent him to assist her. May of course is suspicious of Enoch. When he tells her that he’s there to help her and Agent Phillip J. Coulson, May figures out who he is. He’s the guy that sent them to the future.  Enoch confirms and says he’s there to help her. Her leg is in really bad shape and a storm is coming.  The creatures on the surface run away.  May wonders if it’s because of the storm or because of Enoch.  A claw pulls Enoch away just as the lack of gravity lifts May off the ground.  Another claw grabs May. She sees someone in a mask holding her down before she hits her head.

Manston-Dar opens the elevator doors and no one is there. He sees two human slaves walk by and asks them where Quake is.  The man says he doesn’t know so Manston-Dar kills him.  He threatens the other human, but then sees the hatch still open in the elevator.

So, here’s the deal with Faulnak and Kasius.  Both were generals in a war. Kasius lost his battle though. He was forced to flee and lost his outpost.  Their father exiled him because Kasius embarrassed him.  Sinara was with Kasius at that battle and saved his life.  Faulnak likes reminding Kasius that he’s a failure. Now the brothers are competing to find Quake.  Faulnak is confident that his warrior will be successful in killing her.  Kasius, on the other hand, has to convince Sinara to stick with him.  He talks to her in private saying she has faced Quake and knows her mind.  He send Sinara to find Quake before Manston-Dar can.

FitzSimmons and Daisy find themselves in the inner workings of the station.  Fitz finds that the station has gravity because of garvitonium. Before they can explain, Manston-Dar shows up with a gun and shoots Fitz!  He tells Daisy to surrender and of course she doesn’t. She pushes Jemma towards Fitz to help him.  They are able to get through a door, while Daisy fights Manston-Dar. She busts one of the pipes. She uses the steam from the pipe to get away.

Simmons stops to check on Fitz’s wound and they find Deke (Jeff Ward).  The last time we saw Deke, Coulson locked him in his room because he couldn’t be trusted.  He escaped through a window.  He tells Daisy that he was looking for her and followed the trail of dead bodies to find her.  Daisy doesn’t trust him and reveals to Simmons that Deke sold her to Kasius.   Deke defends his actions by saying he held up his end of the deal by leading Daisy to Jemma. He assures them that he is on Team SHIELD now. Fitz says they need to quit arguing and get somewhere safe.

Mack tries to console Flint about Tess. Flint says he should turn himself in so no one else will get hurt. Mack tells him not to.  He says he has a gift now that he can use to protect his people.

Daisy, FitzSimmons and Deke show up and the team is reunited…minus May.  Coulson asks if she was sent to the surface and Fitz confirms that she was.  So their next move is get out of the station and find May.  Simmons asks for help to treat Fitz’s wound.  Mack says Flint can help them get supplies.  There’s just one problem.  Flint has disappeared.

Flint goes to the Vicar.  He says too many people have died for him.  The Vicar says because Flint ran, he will not receive any of the honors that other Inhumans have had.  A Kree guard searchs Flint and finds a bunch of rocks.  Flint says no more innocent lives will be lost and he kills the Vicar with the rocks.  Sinara comes up behind Flint and hits him in the head. She tells the guard that she is using him for bait.

Daisy, Coulson and Mack see what happened.  They have to get Flint back safely.  Daisy steps forward and tells Sinara to take her.  Sinara says she will take them both.  Coulson jumps out and shoots Sinara in the arm. Manston-Dar comes from behind and hits Coulson. Mack comes out and fights Manston-Dar.  They fight off the Kree long enough for Daisy to grab Flint and escape.

Once back at the salvage the team discusses their next move. Fitz suggests using the trawler to get to the surface. Deke protests and Coulson tells him to stay. Deke says he’s with them now.

Flint blocks the door with some big rocks to give them time to figure out how to get to the trawler.  However, Manston-Dar has a big gun that is strong enough to put a hole in the wall.

Deke suggests using his anti-gravity belt to get up the elevator shaft to the trawler.  The Kree continue to shoot holes in the wall. Sinara tells Manston-Dar that his way is too slow. Another Kree hands her explosives so they can blow up the wall.  Once they get into the room, Sinara kills Manston-Dar. She sees the door to the elevator close.

Deke is the last to join the group.  They made it to the trawler, but no one knows how to pilot it.  Flint has been taking lessons, but he says he’s not going with them.  He has to stay behind to protect his people.  Mack and Elena decide to stay and help him.  Fitz tells them about the stash of weapons that he hid on level three…the level with all of the vrellnexians.

Coulson volunteers to attempt to fly the trawler.  He has a flying car… how different can it really be?  He does okay until he descends to the surface. Fitz and Simmons finally have a moment to breath.  They are both ready for some alone time.  The trawler hits turbulence as it descends to the surface.

Sinara reports to Kasius and Faulnak that the agents escaped to the surface.  Faulnak says he will send Manston-Dar to the surface.  Sinara says she killed Manston-Dar.  Faulnak is amused.  He says he underestimated Sinara and wants her to join him.  Kasius stabs Faulnak, saying Sinara will not be taken from him.  He tells Faulnak what really happened at his outpost.

Kasius lost two generals because Sinara killed them. They were trying to keep Kasius from fleeing from the battle. That is how Sinara saved his life.  He tells Faulnak that the battlefield is not his place and he no longer cares what his father thinks.  Faulnak calls him a coward and Kasius kills him. Kasius says they will tell his father that the Destroyer killed Faulnak. And Kasius avenged his death.  The he and Sinara will have everything they’ve ever wanted.

May wakes up and sees Enoch.  She sits up and recognizes the SHIELD symbol on the wall. They are in what’s left of the Zephyr.  She asks who saved them.  Three people walk in including an older woman, holding a wooden robin. She says she’s been waiting a long time to see May again.

Thoughts

Whew! What a ride! And it’s not even close to being over.  For one, we don’t actually know what the agents are saving humanity from.   It’s easy to assume that they are saving humanity from the Kree, but maybe not.  Maybe it’s something bigger.

I had a feeling we’d see Robin Hinton, the little girl with the wooden robin.  She’s the one who set all of this in motion, so it’s only fitting that she’s there to explain everything to all of us.

I’m really liking this season.  I’ll admit…I was skeptical about the direction.  But the season has moved at a steady pace, the characters are compelling, and action is exciting!  The 100th episode is coming up.  So you know it’s only going to get better.
