Whilst doing the rounds of promotion for Marvel‘s newly released Captain Marvel, Phil Coulson actor Clark Gregg heavily suggested that the currently-filming seventh season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D will be the show’s last.
Speaking to KTLA 5 News this week and reminiscing over a decade of playing this character Gregg stated, “We just started shooting the seventh and final season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D in Culver City, and it’s been an incredible ride.” Whilst this news has yet to be confirmed by either ABC or Marvel, the statement certainly seems to have prickled fans’ ears.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D was surprisingly confirmed for a shortened thirteen-episode run the middle of last year. Despite seasons of declining ratings and even strong held beliefs by the writers that the show’s fifth season would be its last. The last season’s finale episode was even entitled “The End”, written with the intention of being the show’s final sendoff.
Surprisingly, whilst S.H.I.E.L.D’s sixth season has yet to air (although it has now being confirmed to arrive in May), the show was renewed for a seventh season in November of 2018. Whilst the plotlines for next upcoming seasons remain mostly unknown to fans, it may perhaps not come as a surprising revelation that there are currently no plans to continue the show for an eighth season.
Given the recent onslaught of much-loved Marvel shows being cancelled on the streaming service Netflix, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans should rest easy knowing that the show will still be around for this year and the next. In the current age of simply renewing shows purely due to popularity, surely most will agree that they would prefer to see the show continue to deliver high quality storytelling with the majority of its original core cast, with Gregg himself now confirmed to be present in the upcoming season after appearing in a recent trailer.
