The last couple of days, we’ve seen some new promotional art released for the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, due for release in May. In each piece, we’ve seen the two teams — Team Cap and Team Stark, sizing off against each other, very much in the same way we’ve seen so much of the past art.
However, there’s one gigantic difference — on Captain America’s side, Scarlet Witch has been replaced with Sharon Carter, a.k.a. Agent 13, played by Emily VanCamp.
This is curious because, all the team line-ups up to this point have included Scarlet Witch and have left Sharon Carter out of it. You can see this in the piece below.
No Sharon Carter, but plenty of Scarlet Witch being a bad ass.
It’s entirely possible that this is just a simple switch up to remind people, ahead of the movie, that she is in it and plays a role on Cap’s team. Maybe marketing just wants people to realize that she’s in it before they go into the film, to familiarize themselves with her face and know to see her as a major part of Cap’s team. There could be little more than that behind the decision and absolutely nothing to do with the plot of the film.
However, it’s also entirely possible that there’s a reason marketing feels that way. Perhaps, during the editing process, Marvel and Disney started realizing that she has a bigger role to play in the film and that’s why they changed it up. Maybe she’s a love interest for Steve Rogers as she is in the comics? Maybe it’s tied back to Peggy Carter who, in the comics, was her aunt.
Or maybe, they want us to see that she’s on Cap’s side because she ends up turning on him half way through the film?
Chances are good that there’s not a lot behind the decision to include her beyond a simple marketing decision to get her face out there along with everyone else’s, but it is interesting to think about.
