On Sunday, Disney released the first official trailer for the Star Wars prequel Solo: A Star Wars Story, which tells the tale of how Han Solo (previously played by Harrison Ford, now portrayed by Alden Ehrenreich) becomes the smuggler we all know and love.

The trailer lends to the notion that the movie will be more like a team heist action film, but set in space. And I’m okay with this. Solo is meant to be Han Solo’s backstory, but it looks like we’ll get a lot more history on Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) and Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover), too. If you think Lando is suave in the original films, get ready for Glover’s performance! He once again steals the scene and may very well steal the show.

Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid.

Han’s line from A New Hope about keeping a blaster by your side isn’t all just talk. His blaster is riding right on his hip in this trailer and it looks like it will get plenty of use, whether the situation truly warrants it or not.

Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) is Qi’Ra, a childhood friend of Han’s, and she starts the trailer as a voice-over, asking Han what he is looking for. It is here that we see our first few tidbits of the movie: a standoff on a desert planet, the card game where (in theory) Han wins the Millennium Falcon, and the ship itself. She comments that Han is “rough around the edges”, which is something we know he never really outgrows.

The Heist Crew Comes Together

Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson) recruits Han for a job – Han pitches his talents as a driver and pilot, looking for adventure. Through Tobias, Han meets Val (Thandie Newton) who knows a guy to get a ship: Lando Calrissian. Rounding out the crew, from what we see, is Han’s new best friend, Chewie (who we also see with his mate), and a smart-mouthed droid called L3 (short for L3-37, voiced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge).

Adventure Awaits

Action filled scenes on a rail freighter, in the midst of an Empire controlled region, around a space beast, and outrunning a star destroyer are thrown into the trailer, too, along with the iconic hyperspace jump from the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon. Solo: A Star Wars Story teases an adventure and a few hard lessons for Han. Tobias tells Han to always “assume everyone will betray you, and you will never be disappointed” (with a very telling cutaway to Lando), and poor Han tells Chewie that he has “a good feeling about this”, which is the complete opposite of the Han Solo we know. What could possibly go wrong on a dangerous mission for a big shot gangster?

See the Shiny New Poster

The beautiful new poster for Solo: A Star Wars Story is a great nostalgic callback to the 70’s, a lovely nod to the era that brought us the original trilogy. The poster features Han front and center, blaster at the ready, with the entire crew (L3, Val, Lando, Qi’Ra, Chewie, and Tobias) behind him, all obscuring the Millennium Falcon – but the Falcon’s front window pattern shows a desert steppe cityscape beyond. May 25th just feels so far away….
