Highlights:

  • Universal has given us a second peak at the child vampire movie, Abigail.
  • Kidnapping a blood drinking child ballerina remains a dumb idea.
  • Abigail pirouettes into theatres on April 19th.

When Universal dropped the original trailer for Abigail back in January, it was a pretty good reminder that 1) an ancient vampire trapped in a child’s body is bad news and 2) trying to kidnap one dressed as a ballerina is about the only thing worse. Welp, the new Abigail trailer has done nothing to change our mind on that score. But it does offer another helpful reminder for when you and your buds find yourself in this situation…

…Always, ALWAYS Stay Together!

In the original trailer, we learned that Abigail is the story of a group of kidnappers hired to nab a little girl, the daughter of an underworld figure. All they have to do is watch young Abigail for one night in a remote mansion and they will walk away with $50 million (a very high ransom, tbh). Well, maybe that beefy pile of cash should have been a red flag because they soon find themselves locked in the mansion, which is some kind of prison with automatic doors. And the wee little ballerina they are holding captive turns out to be a full-on vampire with a mouth full of pointy teeth.

The new trailer doesn’t do much to expand on this story, which has a pretty straightforward hook. But it does give us a better sense of the tone the movie takes, which is terrifying with a little tongue in the cheek. This trailer starts with a scene where the group has somehow trapped Abigail in a cage. Though she’s covered in blood (presumably having drained it from one or more of their pals) she very creepily tries reverting to little girl mode.

Then one of the kidnappers gets cocky and tries mocking the little vamp and, yeah, that’s a mistake. And after the wee bloodsucker busts out of the cage with Hulk-like strength, the mistakes just pile up. With the worst one being the hilariously basic blunder of “splitting up”. Oh kidnappers, haven’t you ever seen a horror movie or played any D&D? NEVER. SPLIT. THE. PARTY.

A Bloody Spring

Abigail is helmed by the directing team Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Ready Or Not, Scream franchise) with a script from Stephen Shields (The Hole In The Ground) and Guy Busick (Ready Or Not, Scream franchise). It features a cast that includes Melissa Barrera (Scream franchise, In the Heights) and Dan Stevens (Gaslit, Legion) and is one of the last projects from the late Angus Cloud (Euphoria). The title character is played by Alisha Weir (Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, Darklands).

You can catch Abigail when it hits theatres on Friday, April 19th. That’s the height of Spring, y’all. And with its main competition that weekend being the similarly gore-soaked The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare it looks like the buds and birdies will be covered in blood and guts.
