15 years after its debut, Avatar: The Last Airbender is back and the entire universe is expanding! Nickelodeon Animation announced the new Avatar Studios on Wednesday during the Viacom CBS Investor Day presentation.

The new division will create original content based in the Avatar world. Best of all, the show’s creators and executive producers Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are on board and fully involved with the project. In an exclusive statement to Entertainment Weekly, DiMartino and Konietzko expressed their excitement.  “We have an unparalleled opportunity to develop our franchise and its storytelling on a vast scale, in myriad exciting ways and mediums”.

For those who are unfamiliar, Avatar: The Last Airbender follows a 12-year-old monk named Aang as he travels the world mastering the elements to defeat the evil Fire Nation. The original show premiered on Nickelodeon in 2005 and gained renewed attention with its addition to Netflix last year. The show generated a sequel series, The Legend of Korra, along with many books and graphic novels.

In 2018, Netflix announced a live-action series. Fans were disappointed when DiMartino and Konietzko left the project this past August. The team touched on this (positively!) in their statement. “We’re excited to be back at Nickelodeon where Avatar began, doing what we do best in the biggest way possible. We can’t wait to build the great teams and productions to make all of this fantasy a reality.”

Avatar Studios will produce content for Paramount+ and Nickelodeon, in addition to other platforms and theatrical releases. Their first project, an animated theatrical film, should start production later this year.
