This isn’t what we wanted to read on a Friday. Deadline reports Amazon Studios has reversed its decision to renew A League of Their Own and The Peripheral for their respective second seasons. This comes five months after the streamer greenlit A League of Their Own for a truncated, four-episode final season. Similarly, The Peripheral was renewed for Season 2 six months ago.

A League of Their Own premiered its eight-episode freshman season on Prime Video on August 12, 2022, to rave reviews from critics and fans alike. The series is an adaptation of the 1992 film of the same name. Led by Abbi Jacobson as Carson Shaw and Chanté Adams as Max Chapman, the show hones in on female baseball players during World War II, drawing inspiration from the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (founded in 1943).

The series smashed barriers for its depiction of queer love and WLW relationships in a period-piece setting. It also beautifully showcases a Black trans man living in that time. A League of Their Own bursts at the seams with so much heart and humor.

The Peripheral premiered its eight-episode first season on Prime Video on October 21, 2022. Chloë Grace Moretz stars as Flynne Fisher, a woman adept at playing advanced video games. When she has the opportunity to explore a new VR game, she seizes it, uncovering a dark alternate reality and a mystery connected to her. The show hails from the creators of Westworld, and its immersive, richly intricate mythology is undoubtedly influenced by it. It’s a fun, inventive new sci-fi series that was finding its groove.

Fans have rallied to save A League of Their Own before, so it would be unsurprising if efforts will ramp up after this development. As for The Peripheral, it, too, deserves another chance to shine. This double-whammy news is disappointing, to say the least.
