A Closer Look at WORLD OF WARCRAFT Warbringers Animated Shorts

With just two weeks left until World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth releases, we were treated to not just one but two animated Warbringers shorts over the last week. Blizzard announced back in the beginning of July that we will be getting three before the launch of BFA. We are being given a little glimpse into the stories of Jaina, Sylvanas and Azshara through a comic-styled animated short with voice over and music. World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth is set to be released on August 14, 2018 for PC. If you have not gotten a chance to watch the shorts yet, skip to the bottom and watch before reading!

Last week we were introduced to Warbringers: Jaina, a beautiful sea chanty of her past and future.  The animated short follows her as she takes a look into her past and her choice to stand aside while the Horde killed her father. Always wanting to fight for peace, Jaina found herself at the other end of a mighty Horde as they destroyed her home and left her with no one by her side. Now she understands that there can never be true peace between these two major forces and is ready to make her stand. Not only do we get a beautiful visual story but the song is filled with a story of her past. The speaking and singing voice for Jaina is portrayed by the amazing Laura Bailey and the outcome is beautiful.

Today we got our first glimpse of what BFA holds for the Horde and their Warchief in Warbringers: Sylvanas. While no song accompanies this dark animated short, we can see that every choice in war can shift its course. In game, players of both the Alliance and Horde are fighting for control of the Night Elf home and the World Tree, Teldrassil. Finally Sylvanas gains the upper hand and as she approaches the world tree, she is met by Captain Delaryn Summermoon who questions why she continues even though she has won. When asked if she remembers defending her own people we are given a flashback of Sylvanas’ last moments. While attempting to defend her people she is struck down by Arthas and turned undead. In a split moment to prove a point to captain Summermoon she decides to set fire to the world tree to show that she can kill hope. Sylvanas has been voiced by the amazing Patty Mattson since 2004.

These shorts are truly beautiful in their own ways. I am in love with the song from Jaina’s cinematic and am amazed at how beautiful they tell her story. If you know her backstory, you know that she gave up her whole family for the greater peace and it stabbed her in the back. Now we are expecting her epic return in BFA and I cannot wait to see how her story continues. The Sylvanas short, while upsetting as I am a Night Elf Druid main, was beautiful as well. We got to see how nothing will stand in her way and that she believes what she is doing is right. I also love seeing her flashback as she faces off against Arthas. This has always been one of my favorite stories in game and I love that they are focusing on that as well. Next Tuesday we should be getting the final Warbringers: Azshara animated short.
