Why the 69th Emmy Awards Are Unlike Recent Years

Updated on:

The most important time for TV lovers and the TV industry itself, has officially arrived, Emmy season! With the nominees for the 69th Emmy Awards announced Thursday morning, there is much to discuss.

The category I find most interesting this year is Best Drama Series. A lot of newcomers have emerged for a chance to hold the golden winged statue. The Crown, The Handmaids Tale, Stranger Things, This is Us and Westworld  are all nominated for their first season.

Now you may be looking at this list and feel as though something is different. You would be absolutely right. With Game of Thrones not airing until late July, it wont be up for consideration this year.  This is a huge change considering GOT has the most Emmy wins in Emmy history with an impressive 38.

This also opens up other categories such as Best Supporting Actor/Actress  since Peter Dinklage, Kit Harrington, Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey and Maisie Williams are not able to compete. Also, last years best Supporting Actress, Maggie Smith will not be in the running since Downtown Abbey has ended. This year will definitely be a change of pace for the Emmys and much more suspenseful for the fans.

With the abundance of new talent and Stephen Colbert hosting, this is a must-watch event. Be sure to watch the 69th Emmys on Sunday September 17th 8/7c on CBS. Heres the full list of Emmy Nominees:
