Welcome to Tavern Talk Thursday! We are expanding! What started as a column dedicated to chatting with members of the TTRPG community is growing to talk about all things TTRPG. We aim to continue sharing everything we love about the community and all the content within. So, consider this a little peek into our favorite worlds and creators as we explore everything we love.

While we all love sitting around the table with our friends and family facing off against monsters of all shapes and sizes, there is something about diving into the virtual world, whether with friends or on our own. With tons of different genres, picking the perfect video game to fit our every want and need can be quite a challenge. So, we are doing some of the work for you! If you, like us, love TTRPGs and are looking for a video game adaptation, we’ve got you covered. From fighting vampires to adventuring in some of Dungeons & Dragons most iconic areas to facing off against Lovecraftian cults and much more, we’ve got ideas for you. Which one of these video games is on your must-play list?

TTRPG Video Game Adaptations to Enjoy

Call of Cthulhu

We are kicking this list off with one of our favorite TTRPG video game adaptations, Call of Cthulhu. Brought to the video game screen by Cyanide Studio and Focus Entertainment, this adaptation of the Lovecraftian-inspired TTRPG is one of our favorites. It follows Private Investigator Pierce as he looks into the mysterious death of the Hawkins family. Everything from the atmosphere to the creeping madness and our pure terror makes this playthrough amazing. And tie that into how you can customize your game style via character attributes that relate to the original RPG, making going back for another playthrough enjoyable.

Check out Call of Cthulhu on PC through Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch.

Baldur’s Gate 3

Did you think we wouldn’t talk about Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3? It has taken over our lives since it hit early release and only continued to hold onto our hearts after its official release back in August 2023. It’s D&D in video game form and gives long-time players everything they love. It’s packed with a story pulled right from the universe we love and allows players to venture into the virtual world we have created in our heads. What’s great is that even though it is so heavy with the D&D realm, its reach is not limited to just those who play the TTRPG. It has something for everyone to enjoy, and maybe it might even convince those friends who aren’t ready to meet at the table that now is the time.

Check out Baldur’s Gate 3 on PC through Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines

Troika Games and Activision’ Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines is an oldie but a goodie. Based on the TTRPG of the same name, this video game delivers everything we love. This is a must-play from the dark and gritty underworld to the core RPG elements. And yes, we know the game was released 20 years ago, in 2004, but that doesn’t mean you should shy away from playing. In fact, it just proves that it can stand the test of time. Plus, with Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 dropping sometime in 2024, there is even more reason to check out the original.

Icewind Dale

Black Isle Studios and Beamdog’s Icewind Dale holds a special place in my heart for TTRPG video game adaptations. I remember having the absolutely stunning box the computer game came in and felt like I owned the world. Based within the world of D&D, this takes adventurers through the Icewind Dale campaign. In 2014, when the game turned 14, Beamdog released an enhanced edition with updated characters, graphics, and additional content. It is an absolute work of art worthy of playthrough after playthrough. We only hope that they continue to bring us video game adaptations of our favorite campaigns.

Check out Icewind Dale on PC through Steam.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker

Our final TTRPG video game adaptation is Owlcat Games and Prime Matter’s Pathfinder: Kingmaker. Based on the Pathfinder TTRPG, this lets players explore and conquer the Stolen Lands and build up their kingdoms. Just like playing at the table, characters are customizable to allow players to enjoy the game exactly how they want to. Want to play a good guy saving the world? Got it. Want to play a questionably bad guy who wants gold and riches? You bet. The possibilities are endless.

Check out Pathfinder: Kingmaker on PC through Steam, PS4 and Xbox One.
