A still from the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy.

Have you heard the good news? Star Trek: Prodigy is returning! The beloved animated series was canceled on Paramount+ in June 2023. But earlier this week, it was announced that Prodigy seasons 1 and 2 will be heading to Netflix in 2023 and 2024

For this Trek Tuesday, we’ve got several ideas about how you can celebrate the impending return of Prodigy. How are you marking the occasion?

Star Trek: Prodigy: Supernova

Did you know that there’s a Prodigy video game? Better yet, did you know it features the voice talents of almost the entire cast? Captain Dal R’el (Brett Gray), Gwyn (Ella Purnell), Rok-Tahk (Rylee Alazraqui), Zero (Angus Imrie), Murf (Dee Bradley Baker), Jankom Pog (Jason Mantzoukas), Hologram Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and a version of Drednok (Jimmi Simpson) all reprise their roles for Star Trek: Prodigy: Supernova. In this game, Dal and Gwyn must race against the ticking clock of an impending supernova explosion.

Supernova, best played in co-op mode, allows players to explore a new planet. The game is an all-new story set during the six months between the two halves of Prodigy season 1. However, the plot of Supernova relates to the series in a way that is too intriguing to spoil here. But suffice it to say that fans eager for more fresh Prodigy now will find Supernova slakes their thirst.

Supernova is a fun and rewarding experience in and of itself. However, the most devoted Trekkies will want to spend extra time poring over every level in the game. This is because of the many collectible items.

However, collection in and of itself isn’t the reward. When you find certain items, you’ll unlock special trophies that appear in the USS Protostar‘s captain’s quarters. These include a plushie of Janeway’s “evolution” from the Star Trek: Voyager episode “Threshold.” Resistance is futile.

Mikros Animation BTS Clips on YouTube

Are you interested in going into the field of animation? Or maybe you just want to know more about the incredible details that so many people work to put into Prodigy? Then look no further than this series of behind-the-scenes videos on YouTube. These videos were put together by Mikros Animation. This animation studio has worked on several high-profile projects in addition to Prodigy. These include The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

Each of the Prodigy videos features a member of the animation crew discussing their work on the series. While these “#OpenMik” videos were originally posted a year ago, around the time Prodigy season 1’s finale aired, you may not have caught them. Even though they are incredibly informative and interesting, many of these videos only have a few hundred views each. Don’t delay in checking them out today.

A Proto-warpable Feast

Want to celebrate the return of Prodigy with food from the show? Some dishes have been specifically mentioned in Prodigy season 1. The first is hot dogs! In “Asylum,” the crew of the Protostar arrives at a Federation comms relay station. There, Jankom samples human foods from the replicator. Or should I use the singular “food,” since all he eats is a giant pile of hot dog links?

Dal (Brett Gray), Rok-Tahk (Rylee Alazraqui) and Murf (Dee Bradley Baker) put their hands up as they're surrounded by Romulan agents.

The second food featured in Prodigy that is readily available on Earth is one of humanity’s greatest accomplishments: ice cream! If you don’t believe in the power of ice cream, be sure to check out the Star Trek: Short Treks episode “Runaway,” followed by Star Trek: Discovery season 2’s “Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 1.”

One ice cream topping, in particular, is mentioned in Prodigy‘s “Ghost in the Machine.” This is whipped cream. At first, Gwyn wonders what kind of maniac whips cream. However, she is soon won over by this popular ice cream topping.

One thing is especially important when enjoying your hot dogs and ice cream. Both menu items go very well with a variety of toppings. Prepare your meal with the toppings you like best, no matter what others prefer. As seen in “Starstruck,” that’s Janeway’s orders.

While you can stream Prodigy season 1 on Netflix soon, you may be impatient. If this is the case, Prodigy season 1 is now available in two volumes on DVD and Blu-ray. Each set includes bonus features that shed even more light on the making of the series.
