File this under interesting and baffling. Deadline is reporting that Emmett/ Furla/ Oasis Films has closed a deal to partner with Atari to producer and finance two feature film based on the 1980 arcade games Centipede and Missile Command. Randall Emmett and George Furla will produce. Atari, Stephen Belafonte, Wayne Marc Godfrey and Robert Jones with executive produce.
I’m not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, yay more video game movies that will hopefully not live up to the video game movie curse. On the other hand, there isn’t really any story here to go with, at least, not enough to make a movie. I’m reminded of the recent trend of making movies based on board games, Battleship anyone?
Hollywood is snapping up the right to anything that has to do with geek culture, this isn’t the first and it won’t be the last. Furthermore, with the release of the Ready Player One movie within the next two years, this kind of property will probably be hot, hot, hot. As long as the movie doesn’t tank.
