Courtesy of EW, we now have a new trailer for the Netflix animated series Voltron: Legendary Defender.

For old and new fans alike, here is the official synopsis:

Five unsuspecting teenagers, transported from Earth into the middle of a sprawling intergalactic war, become pilots for five robotic lions in the battle to protect the universe from evil. Only through the true power of teamwork can they unite to form the mighty warrior known as Voltron: Legendary Defender.

As with most of the early anime that made it to American television, the original 80s Voltron: Defender of the Universe was a heavily edited version of the Japanese animated show Beast King GoLion.  Once the show went through the editing process, it came out the other end very different than the Japanese program, more kid friendly and less violent.  The end result was a mess that children of the 80s couldn’t get enough of, myself included.

The creators of the show wanted to maintain the feeling of the original show but without all the mess.  In other words, they wanted to keep the spirit of the show but make it better, stronger, faster.  After watching the trailer, I believe they may have succeeded.  It has the slick, high quality look I’ve come to expect from DreamWorks and it managed to push all the nostalgia buttons with the character designs.

Voltron: Legendary Defender will premier on Netflix on June 10.
