Through press release, Channel 4 in the UK and Sony Pictures Television announced they are bringing a ten-part anthology series based on the works of Philip K. Dick.

Electric Dreams: The World of Philip K. Dick, will be written and executive produced by Emmy-nominated Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) and Michael Dinner (Justified, Masters of Sex), with Oscar nominated Bryan Cranston (Trumbo, Breaking Bad) both executive producing and appearing in the series.

Philip K. Dick was an American author, born 1928 and died 1982, whose works mainly fell into the category of science fiction.  Although not getting the full recognition he deserved during his life, his works have shaped, and continue to shape, modern science fiction in all forms.  Both his short stories and novels have been inspirations in Hollywood for decades, spinning off multiple adaptations of his works.  This is just another in a long line.

If you aren’t familiar with his writing, you are familiar with his stories.  Blade Runner, The Adjustment Bureau, A Scanner Darkly, Paycheck, Minority Report (movie and TV show), both Total Recall (obviously) and, most recently, the Amazon series The Man in the High Castle are all adaptations of Philip K Dick’s written word.

“All of his work starts with the basic assumption that there cannot be one, single, objective reality”, writes science fiction author Charles Platt. “Everything is a matter of perception. The ground is liable to shift under your feet. A protagonist may find himself living out another person’s dream, or he may enter a drug-induced state that actually makes better sense than the real world, or he may cross into a different universe completely.”

Each episode will be a sharp, thrilling standalone drama adapted and contemporised for global audiences by a creative team of British and American writers. The series will both illustrate Philip K. Dick’s prophetic vision and celebrate the enduring appeal of the prized Sci-Fi novelist’s work.

Bryan Cranston said; “This is an electric dream come true. We are so thrilled to be able to explore and expand upon the evergreen themes found in the incredible work of this literary master.”

“As a long-time fan of Philip K. Dick’s work, it’s a tremendous honour and thrill to be part of this series,” said Ronald D. Moore. “His short stories are a treasure-trove of material for artists to draw from and I think this will be a very exciting project.”

“I’m thrilled to be working with this exceptional team to bring my father’s short stories to life,” said Isa Dick Hackett. “Often the source for big, high concept feature films, these short stories represent some of the most dazzling conceptual work of his career, and the fact that they will be adapted by such a diverse set of creative voices is truly an honour.”
