Women in video games is nothing new for this day in age. In many games you are able to choose between which gender you would like to play or follow a female based story line. I remember a time when all playable characters were male and having a female character was considered a milestone. Well folks, it’s 2018 and times are a-changing. I was beyond myself during E3 2018 when the announcement regarding Gears 5 and Wolfenstein: Youngblood were going to feature female playable characters. In my excitement I put together a list of ten upcoming video games with female protagonists!

Cyperpunk 2077

This futuristic RPG (role playing game) is an open world game set in the dystopian city Night City, California. Players will take control of V, a character players are free to customize in several different ways. One of the best? Their gender! They can also adjust their body type, body modifications and clothing. Not to mention Cyperpunk 2077 will allow players to have relationships with NPC characters as well. While no release date has been set, we are all hopeful for a date in 2019. It will be available for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

Assassins Creed Odyssey

This isn’t the first time Assassins Creed has allowed players to choose which path to follow. In Assassins Creed Syndicate players took control of twin sister Evie Frye for major story lines and missions. This is no different with Assassins Creed Odyssey which allows you to play as Kassandra. However it seems that once you choose your gender, it won’t force you to play the other without starting over completely. This installment takes place in the year 431 BCE and follows a fictional plot line surrounding the battle between Athens and Sparta. Assassins Creed Odyssey is slated to release on October 5, 2018 for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood

Announced during E3 2018, Wolfenstein: Youngblood will feature two female protagonists Jessica and Sophia Blazkowicz. They are the twin daughters of B.J. Blazkowicz, the main protagonist from other Wolfenstein titles. While little game play was shown, the trailer featured an introduction to this two Nazi shooting ladies. These two ladies will be the first female playable characters in a Wolfenstein game and they are shaping up to be pretty epic. Wolfenstein: Youngblood is set to release in 2019.

The Last Of Us Pt 2

Ellie is returning in the long awaited sequel to Naughty Dog’s horror action adventure game The Last Of Us. During the the Playstation panel at E3 we were treated to a cut scene featuring one of the best kisses I’ve ever seen in a video game. Aside from this cut scene we also got to see some game play featuring awesome fight scenes and a pretty stealthy Ellie making her way into what seems like behind enemy lines. While no release date has been set, we are all hoping for The Last Of Us Pt 2  will release in 2019.

Battlefield V

Battlefield V is that sixteenth installment in the Battlefield series and the first to include female playable characters. The game had quite a bit of backlash regarding the inclusion of female players however EA DICE backed up their decision and won’t let it change. Oskar Gabrielson, the general manager at DICE took to twitter to say, “Let me be clear about one thing. Player choice and female playable characters are here to stay.” It will be great to see how Battlefield V compares to other titles in the series. It is set to release on October 19, 2018 for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

Shadows of the Tomb Raider

Lara Croft has always been one of my favorite female protagonists to play. In Shadows of the Tomb Raider, she faces one of her biggest adventures yet. During her travels through South America she sets off the next Mayan Apocalypse and must do everything to try and save the world. When the Tomb Raider series was re imagined back in 2015 with Rise of the Tomb Raider I was excited to see my childhood heroine brought back to life with updated graphics and game play. Shadows of the Tomb Raider is set to release on September 14, 2018 for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

Anthem

The up and coming action multiplayer RPG Anthem, which is currently in development by BioWare. will introduce to a while new world. They will take over the role of a freelancer who needs to leave the civilization to explore their surrounding landscapes. Players will also be able to choose between playing a male or female character. However unlike some other games that add variations to male and female gear, you will find very little in Anthem. This is a welcome change to what has become almost a norm in games today. Anthem will release on February 22, 2019 for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

Gears 5

During E3, Gears 5 shocked viewers with the reveal of Kait Diaz, voiced by Laura Bailey, as the main protagonist in this new installment. Players will follow alongside her story line as she delves into her past. There was a bit of backlash as a small portion of players were not happy with there choice. However during Gears 4 we were given clues as to Kait’s background and honestly I couldn’t think of a better path to follow. Game wise, it looks visually stunning and the story line is filled with twists and turns from beginning to end. Gears 5 is set to release next year for Xbox One and PC.

Beyond Good and Evil 2

Beyond Good and Evil 2 will allow players to choose which gender along with a few other things before tossing you into the world. Players will start at the very bottom of a social system and must use their skills to improve their standing. Not much is known regarding much of the game play however there will be a single player mode and a co-op mode as well. Even in single player mode, the player can interact with events happening in the shared universe as well. Right now Beyond Good and Evil 2 does not have a release date however I’ve been waiting since 2003, what is a few more years?

Control

Main protagonist Jesse Faden is shaping up to be one of my favorite female protagonists of all time. Control is a third person shooter action adventure that relies on players upgrading their Director’s Pistol. They also can use Jesse’s supernatural powers to assist in taking out enemies as well. While searching for her own answers, Jesse is forced into a battle against an enemy group knows as the Hiss and must do everything in her power to stop them. Control has a 2019 release year and will be playable on PC, Xbox One and PS4.
