Today Square Enix announced that their next JRPG will be Lost Sphear. It is currently being developed by Tokyo RPG Factory, the studio behind last year’s I Am Setsuna. While there is no set release date just yet, the game is scheduled to arrive in early 2018 on the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Steam for $49.99.

Tokyo RPG Factory is Square Enix’s studio dedicated to creating games that combine Japanese role-playing with the latest technology for new generation consoles. Last year’s I Am Setsuna, originally released in February 2016 on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Steam and this year as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch, was well-received by critics and fans. People praised the art style, the tragic storyline and the beautiful, yet melancholic, piano music, but some players had issues with both the combat system and overall combat balance.

As for Lost Sphear, Square Enix describes it as:

“The adventure of LOST SPHEAR begins in a remote town where a young boy, Kanata, awakens from a devastating dream to find his hometown disappearing. To stop the world from being lost forever, Kanata and his comrades set out to rebuild the world around them with the power of Memory by manifesting thoughts into matter.”

Taking some of the critiques from I Am Setsuna, Lost Sphear promises “an enhanced gameplay system with a revamped ATB battle system where players can strategize and freely adjust their placement mid-fight, seamless environments, and various locations to explore.”

You can now pre-order a physical copy of the game for the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch from the Square Enix store. Limited copies are available but if you do preorder, you will receive two special soundtracks by composer Tomoki Miyoshi. Digital pre-orders not available at this time.
