In revamping Star Wars, we learned about a bit about our new characters in the galaxy. Besides our main players, one figure has been the topic of series debate with his apparent mystery. And that is about who Supreme Leader Snoke is. Everyones Snoke theory sucks, but the actor behind him gave us a clearer picture.
In talking with EW, performance-capture master actor Andy Serkis was able to talk, just a little bit, about the intimidating figure. Not much is known of him and apparently we won’t learn much else about his past in the story, either. But we did learn that he preys on young men, promising them power, like Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), and apparently discarding them when they’re no longer of value. Yikes. He gets creepier and creepier by the minute! He’s currently preying on both Kylo Ren and General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson), not being able to stand any weakness from them. Serkis was able to give light to Snoke’s mindset.
His training of Kylo Ren is not yielding what he wants. Therefore his anger towards Kylo Ren is intensified because he can’t bear weakness in others. Part of the manipulation is goading him with Hux and playing them off against each other.
But what’s more interesting is where he puts his rage outside of his protégés. Serkis was able to delve further and reveal that Snoke blames the Galactic Republic for his scarring. Since destroying the Senate, there’s still a remanant – The Resistance. And the Supreme Leader is going after the battered few who are left as hard as he can.
The thing about Snoke is that he is extremely strong with the Force, the dark side of the Force. He’s terribly powerful, of course. But he is also a very vulnerable and wounded character. He has suffered and he has suffered injury. The way that his malevolence comes out is in reaction to that. His hatred of the Resistance is fueled by what’s happened to him personally…You witness his physicality. His body is kind of twisted up like a corkscrew, and so he has limited movement. His aggression and his anger is contained and restricted by that physicality.
That injury includes a cracked skull, blown out cheek and a twisted body that limits his mobility. We were able to glimpse his body deformity in the behind the scenes footage of The Force Awakens. Just what could form such injuries? I have SO many questions. But the deformity won’t stop him and his wrath. But outside of his wrath is his greed, something we’ve glimpsed in his clothing and over-the-top throne room.
He’s slightly oligarch. You know, he’s not afraid of showing his fineries. There is a luxury that’s native to him. The way that his court is presented, he’s very totalitarian in that way and flamboyant. He enjoys that theatricality, I think.
Well that doesn’t really tell us about his past, but we know that he loves to show off his wealth. How that’s tied to his motivations, we may not learn in the film. Perhaps in a visual dictionary at some point! But wealth, power and rage define this character – and it makes him extremely dangerous to our heroes who get in his way.
