The Sexual Politics of Movies 2016

The Sexual Politics for Movies in 2016 IMHO by Chris Morris “It’s getting better” seems to be what the internet tells me. All the time. Women are starring in major blockbusters and not only that, but they are directing them too! We finally have a Wonder Woman movie coming out, directed by Patty Jenkins. A Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel movie! Still no Black Widow, but still…Captain Marvel! The all-female Ghostbusters came out and the world didn’t end! Suicide Squad’s star isn’t Will Smith’s Deadshot but really it’s Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. The new Star Trek Beyond had more female speaking...

It’s Confirmed…. Idris Elba Will Be At San Diego Comic-Con!

According to the SDCC Unofficial Blog, Variety’s SDCC party list confirms that Idris Elba will be in town for the Star Trek: Beyond premiere! Idris is the main villain, by the name of Krall,  in the latest Star Trek movie, penned by fellow castmate Simon Pegg and his writing partner, Doug Jung. What we now about Krall, from this latest TV spot for Beyond, is that he seems to be human at one point, and has since transformed: Eek, Idris could honestly, do absolutely nothing, I mean nothing, and I would watch him for two hours. Not weird at all. Check out this featurette about Krall: Idris Elba is currently in production for Stephen King’s Dark Tower.  Star Trek: Beyond opens in wide release this...

Sulu Is Openly Gay in Star Trek: Beyond According to John Cho

Star Trek has beaten Star Wars in the race (yes, there was a race according to some hardcore fans) to have the first openly gay character. While we all hope that one day sexual orientation in fictional characters won’t be so headline grabbing, today is not that day. In fact, today we can celebrate. Star Trek has always been known and praised for bringing political and philosophical issues to the big and small screens so it is with much pride that they are continuing that mission. John Cho, who plays Hikaru Sulu in the reboot movies (also called the...

Kirk and Krall Are Our Final Star Trek Beyond Character Posters and Boy, Krall Is Terrifying!

We now have the full crew of our favorite Starfleet ship, the Enterprise, plus an incredibly scary villain and a new protagonist. Over the last week Star Trek Beyond character posters were revealed for: Bones (Karl Urban),  Spock (Zachary Quinto), Chekov (Anton Yelchin), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Sulu (John Cho) and Scotty (Simon Pegg). We also got a really good look at the warrior Jaylah (Sofia Boutella). Today, we get the big guns. We have Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk and our big baddie Krall (Idris Elba). While Chris Pine’s poster exudes leadership, Krall’s poster is terrifying. Where Krall’s attack ships in the crews’ posters are foreboding, in Krall’s poster, the attack...

What We Learned from the New STAR TREK BEYOND Trailer

We’ve all had a couple days to ruminate on the second theatrical trailer from Star Trek Beyond. I won’t go into how much fans disliked the first theatrical trailer released this past December because that’s old hat. We’ll just say it wasn’t well received: too much action, too little old school Star Trek. We want to know, did anything change with this trailer? I mean, we heard so many promises from Justin Lin and Simon Pegg that the trailer would be very different. Well the answer is a big fat YES! Take a look: This trailer was visually creative – showing the...

Joseph Scrimshaw Presents NETFLIX AND TERROR

~Joseph Scrimshaw This is a horror story. In a few years, I believe Netflix will have the technology to speak to us. To emote. When that happens, we are done as a culture. Forget skynet becoming sentient and bombing us. Netflix will sweet talk us and that will be the end. Please enjoy reading this tale of terror while reading is still something Netflix allows us to do. JOSEPH: Hello, Netflix. It’s me, Joseph Scrimshaw. You might remember me from such times as the night I got drunk and watched The Lair of the White Worm at 2 am...

First Star Trek: Beyond Trailer Is All Action

Let’s take a breather from Star Wars mania to go over to that other Universe – Star Trek. Paramount has released the first trailer for Star Trek: Beyond and not surprisingly, with Justin Lin at the helm, it is 90 seconds of fun, fast-paced action with The Beastie Boys ‘Sabotage’ blaring in the background.  The whole feel is, dare I say, Fast and Furious in space. This energy is truly exciting for a Star Trek film. Some may say that the music choice (which was also in the first movie), action and humor goes against the tone of Star Trek...
