Oscar Nominations Announced – La La Land Leads with 14 Nominations

The Academy of Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 89th Academy Awards ceremony to be held on February 26, 2017. Jimmy Kimmel is this year’s host. After sweeping the Golden Globes, La La Land landed 14 Academy Award nominations. Titanic was the last film to received that many nominations.  There were no big surprises.  The nominations pretty much mirror the Golden Globe nominations, as usual.  The big question is, can La La Land keep up the momentum and sweep the Oscars as well? Let us know your predictions!                  ...

THE MUMMY Trailer and Behind the Scenes Go Full MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE

Over the weekend we were treated to the first trailer for the upcoming Tom Cruise movie, The Mummy, and it went full Mission: Impossible. Let’s talk about this for a few minutes, I’m sure most people are drawing the comparison between Mission: Impossible and this new glimpse of The Mummy.  It’s hard not to.  Even the 15 second teaser left the same impression, the full trailer just reinforced it.  I, personally, can’t stand teasers for trailers because trailers are already teasers for the entire movie.  I thought it was impossible to get an idea about a movie based on 15...

Watch the First Teaser for the Upcoming Tom Cruise Movie, THE MUMMY

Universal finally gave us a brief teaser for the upcoming Universal Monster movie reboot, The Mummy.  Starring Tom Cruise, Sofie Boutella, and Russell Crowe, this movie is definitely leaving the comedic approach behind and going full Mission Impossible. To be fair, this is a 15 second teaser so we don’t get much by way of plot, the full trailer will release Sunday.  At that point we will get a clearer glimpse of everything.  Although, based on the description below, Tom Cruise is going full action hero which is what he’s done best for several years now.  No reason to think The...

The Sexual Politics of Movies 2016

The Sexual Politics for Movies in 2016 IMHO by Chris Morris “It’s getting better” seems to be what the internet tells me. All the time. Women are starring in major blockbusters and not only that, but they are directing them too! We finally have a Wonder Woman movie coming out, directed by Patty Jenkins. A Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel movie! Still no Black Widow, but still…Captain Marvel! The all-female Ghostbusters came out and the world didn’t end! Suicide Squad’s star isn’t Will Smith’s Deadshot but really it’s Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. The new Star Trek Beyond had more female speaking...

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN: August 5-7, 2016 – SUICIDE SQUAD ASSASSINATES AUGUST RECORDS

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN: August 5-7, 2016  SUICIDE SQUAD ASSASSINATES AUGUST RECORDS ~Matt Reed Hailing Frequencies Open No surprise as it’s been predicted for several months, but SUICIDE SQUAD opened huge. Its $135.1 mil haul slaughtered the previous record holder, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, by nearly $41 mil. That’s the good news. The bad news is the reviews. To say they’ve been harsh would be an understatement. All threats by some to shut down Rotten Tomatoes aside, it currently rests at 26%. That’s 1% lower than BvS, which, itself, was a critical flop and a middling disappointment. My personal...

The Best of “Overheard at San Diego Comic Con” 2016

San Diego Comic Con 2016 has just ended. I’m back home in my own bed, my feet hurt, I have con crud from the millions of germs that were floating around the convention floor but I am happy. This year I met Steven Moffat, was Neil Gaiman adjacent at a party, got into the Syfy / The Magicians party,  went to the Star Trek Beyond World Premiere where I received super-cool swag, dropped money on some amazing art, danced at Nerd HQ and drank a bit too much. So much that I forgot to tweet my favorite “Overheard at Comic...

Here’s Idris Elba Dancing on Jimmy Fallon – That’s All You Need to Know

This will Geek Girl Authority’s third post that has Idris Elba dancing in some fashion. The first one was when the cast of Star Trek Beyond did a fundraising spot for Omaze. The second is when we posted Macklemore’s awesome video, Dance Off,  in which Elba has a cameo. And now….. Here is the third post with Idris Elba dancing. This time on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Elba tells a cute story about strangers always asking him to have a dance off, usually in the bathroom and also about an ill fated experience DJ’ing with superstar Nile Rodgers. The stories are...

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN: July 15-17, 2016 – Pets Slimes Ghostbusters

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN: July 15-17, 2016  Pets Slimes Ghostbusters ~Matt Reed Hailing Frequencies Open This may be the year of the animated film. ZOOTOPIA has grossed over a billion worldwide, FINDING DORY just set the record for the highest domestic gross of any animated film (beating SHREK 2’s $441.2 mil in 2004) and THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS is not only a smash hit, it kept the #1 position vs. the GHOSTBUSTERS reboot/remake/reimagining. It’s 51% week to week loss is fairly high for an animated film, but $50.5 mil was enough to keep it at the top. Coming...
