Over the weekend an online auction went up on Gumtree claiming to be a PlayStation “slim”.  The images posted showed the console in its box, with accessories, and a front and bottom view of the console.  Earlier today a video confirming the authenticity of the auction was posted.

Not only did the auction claim to be an unannounced version, Sony has never publicly discussed the possibility of a slimmer model for the current generation.  No previous hint from Sony makes this appearance a little bit surprising, although not unheard of.  Both the Ps2 and PS3 consoles eventually released a slimmer version, so it makes sense the PS4 would follow the same pattern.

However, the auction was highly suspect, it’s not the first time someone has said to have new technology ahead of announcement or release and it certainly won’t be the last.  Obviously caution and skepticism was the best policy.  The items people can crank out with a a 3D printer and some talent is truly amazing, there was every possibility this was one such instance.

Polygon and Eurogamer jumped into action in an attempt to confirm the authenticity of the hardware.

The seller of the auction provided Polygon with images of the unboxed PS4, indeed showing a slimmed down, more rounded console.  The box appears to be everything I’ve come to know and expect from a packaged console.  The box shows a 500gb hard drive with accessories that are standard; power, headset, controller, and cable.  Nothing unusual here, but all of this could have been faked.

Earlier today, Eurogamer confirmed the authenticity the Ps4 slim, posting a video showing the console booting up into the PlayStation menu.  Watch the video below, and thanks to Richard Leadbetter for going out of the way to investigate.

In our bid to confirm the veracity of the images that leaked online last night (more on that below), Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter visited the person who claimed to have bought the console from Gumtree.

The official Sony announcement is expected to come during a press conference on September 7 at 3pm EST in New York.  At that time I expect all our questions to be answered and the official names of both the slimmer standard model and the higher end model, codenamed “Neo”, to be revealed.  Hopefully everything from hardware specs to price will be provided.  Until then, expect more leaks and wild expectations.
