Harlem just got a little more awesome. According to Buzzfeed, Lucy Liu will be directing the season 2 premiere of Luke Cage. Yes, THE Lucy Liu. The actress turned director will be taking the helm though it is not known at the present time if she will direct any further episodes in the future.
Last month, Liu was spotted in Harlem with star Mike Colter, leading speculation that the actress was joining the show in a role. Turns out that role is behind the camera! Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker revealed that he and Liu had grown close while working together on the show, Southland.
Lucy and I have been tight since our Southland days and she’s a welcome addition to our Luke Cage family. She brings the same buoyant intensity, deft humor, and singular focus to her directing that she has always brought to her acting…not to mention the fact that the former ‘O’Ren Ishii’ certainly knows her way around an action sequence. Her enthusiasm is infectious.
Executive producer Jeph Loeb couldn’t resist a joke while praising the talented Liu.
When you’re dealing with a bulletproof man, it helps if you have a bulletproof director. Lucy brings a keen eye, a superb sense of story, and an obvious love of actors. She is rocking Luke Cage 2.
This won’t be Liu’s first time directing. Having directed episodes on Elementary (in which she also stars), the now cancelled Graceland and her film debut, Meena. Here’s hoping she’ll be back to take on more in the streets of New York!
What do you think about Liu directing? Let us know! Luke Cage is set to return to Netflix in 2018.
