After five films, the Underworld universe is moving to the small screen according to Deadline. The TV series is based on the action horror movie franchise starring Kate Beckinsale. Underworld solidified Beckinsale’s status as a action star.
Len Wiseman co-wrote and directed the first two movies and produced all five films. He will be producing the series with his company Sketch Films, Lakeshore Entertainment’s Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi and Eric Reid.
Underworld‘s first movie premiered in 2003. It follows the vampire Death Dealer Selene in her personal vendetta against lycans (werewolves). She soon finds out that she has been deceived and her vendetta becomes a fight for survival. The first movie also starred Scott Speedman, Michael Sheen, and Bill Nighy.
The following sequels, Evolution (2006), Awakening (2012), and Blood Wars (2017) focused on Selene’s war against both werewolves and lycans. The fifth film, third in sequence was a prequel to the first movie and brought Sheen back to the franchise. The movie focused on the events that led up to the Vampire-Lycan war prior to Selene’s involvement.
Wiseman says the TV series will be a big departure from the films. “I don’t want to say it’s more adult, but it’s definitely less comic book in its tone and character.” Wisemen is looking for a deal on premium cable/digital streaming markets.
My question is, will the series reboot the story? If so, who would possibly fill Beckinsale’s shoes? Who do you think could play Selene? If anything, a television series could open up the world of vampires and lycans. And it could give Wiseman the opportunity to explore the mythology of Underworld.
