According to Variety, we may be getting quite a different Joker than we were expecting. The site reports that actor Joaquin Phoenix is the top choice to play the Joker in the Todd Phillips stand alone film. Not only that, but the actor is in talks to join the production. This paints a different picture than we had heard when the film was originally announced. So what exactly has changed? Well it appears origin may not be the best word to describe the film.

When the film was announced in August of last year, we had heard that the film would be an origin story for the Joker. Seemingly unconnected to the DCEU, it would have the Joker in “a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City” and “that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era”. It’s currently unknown if they would incorporate Batman into the film or who they would cast in that role, should it come to fruition. We had also heard rumor that Leonardo DiCaprio was being considered for the role of Joker.

Casting older actors doesn’t exactly line-up with an origin film. When you think origin, you typically think younger men and women, at least when it comes to stories in the superhero world. But I can be on board with older actors in the role. What I’m not exactly on board with is Phoenix as Joker. Not that he’s a bad actor, but his method acting might cause some real serious problems if he embraces the clown prince of crime. He’s definitely not what I picture Joker to be – but neither was Heath Ledger and he became one of my favorites. So, I’ll give this a chance if it comes to light. The actor’s own health is what worries me most.
