So, we have a preview for Season 7, episode 5 of Game of Thrones.  And, after a riveting fourth episode, the preview for the next one is, let us say, sparse.  There are some things, however, that caught my eye.

We start on Daenerys talking to surviving Lannister soldiers, ashen and bloodied having been ravaged by Drogon’s fire and the Dothraki horde.  She says, ‘bend the knee and join me, or refuse and die’, and you get a good look at Tyrion’s reaction.

This is bigger than it seems, because this is par for the course for Daenerys.  This is how she has won battles since her dragons were small.  Tyrion is just cluing in to that pattern, and clearly really starting to wonder if Daenerys is more like her mad king father than he thought.  That is apparent in the following clip where he and Varys are discussing trying to reign their Targaryen queen in a bit.   Tyrion’s doubt will play a big role if Jaime is captured and in a position to sway his brother.  I doubt Tyrion would ever go with Cersei… but you just never know.

We see brief shots of the carnage left behind by dragon fire, and Cersei… undeterred in her resolve to win the game.  No surprise there.  I have a feeling she’s got another dragon-killing scheme up her sleeve.

We see Jon Snow confronted by a roaring Drogon at Dragonstone.  He’s still stuck there.  But he’s gotten word that Bran is back in Winterfell, and it looks like Bran is sending his ravens to spy on the developments at Eastwatch by the Sea.  The shot we see of the ravens flying over an army doesn’t tell us anything new, except that we might get some information about the wights in the 5th episode.  It’s time.  We’ve spent a whole lot of time south of the wall in the last two episodes.

Check the preview out for yourself here.  I’ll see you next Sunday.
