The Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer hit last night. Well, trailers, since there was a domestic one and an international one released at the same time.

We’ve already talked about our top ten things we saw in that trailer, things we are excited about, curious about, etc.

But one thing we left out of that novella was the thought that maybe, just maybe, we see Spider-Man in his original costume for some reason.

You can see an example here.

and here.

It’s 100% not clear, so the likelihood that we are grasping at straws is high, but if we’re not, this could give us a pretty big clue into something. For all we know, he was just out for a night with friends or family and happened to be wearing that hoodie when they were all attacked.

Or, as we saw in the trailer, the suit has the ability to seal itself up by pressing the spider shield on his chest. So, perhaps, his suit is just loosely hanging off of him here.

In fact, that second set of shots could just be a stuntman’s suit and not actually what Spider-Man is wearing as, when he slams into the bus, he appears to be wearing his skin tight suit.

So, if it turns out that this is actually his old hoodie outfit, something more akin to what we saw in Captain America: Civil War before Tony Stark made his suit for him, then here are our top theories as to what that could mean.

TL;DR — we’re probably wrong, but speculation on a new Spider-Man film that we’re all super excited about is just about the most fun us comic book nerds can have.

FLASHBACK

First of all, it could just be a flashback to a time before he met Tony Stark and was just starting off. We know we’re not doing an origin story with Spider-Man — we’ve already seen that a few times. Marvel has gone on record saying they’re not doing that. But, what if we’re going back to his first days of Spider-Man’ing to see an important event like the death of his Uncle Ben?

In fact, what if he started wearing that hoodie as Spider-Man because that was the hoodie he was wearing when Uncle Ben was killed?

However, we don’t feel like that’s actually what’s going on here because this shot immediately follows a shot of The Vulture on a similar burning beach, turning around to presumably face Spider-Man.

VILLAIN GENESIS

If he’s indeed wearing one of his first suits when they are at the bus yard, as seen in that second set of photos, then he is there with a Herman Schultz (Bokeem Woodbine) before he becomes The Shocker. He’s got some sort of electro-gauntlet worked out, but he’s not yet fully embraced the “Shocker” alter ego.

This is quickly followed, in the International Trailer, by Michael Keaton‘s character, Adrian Toomes, a.k.a. The Vulture, saying, “The world’s changing boys, time we changed with it.” In that instance, perhaps we are seeing that Spider-Man was able to take down Schultz, Toomes and any other baddies and brought them to the realization that, if they’re going to work in this town, they’ll need some upgrades.

That being the case, then Spider-Man is directly responsible for the birth of The Vulture and his tricked out crew.

SHAKING TONY STARK

If it’s not a flashback, then perhaps he’s discovered that Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr), through the suit he’s made for him, is tracking his movements or spying on him in some way. Spider-Man wanting to strike out on his own and prove to Stark that he belongs in the Avengers, as the two trailers make him out, then it would make sense that he doesn’t want Iron Man knowing where he is. That is, he’s trying to shake Stark so he can be the hero he believes he can be. Stark is holding him back, and perhaps the suit is somehow part of that.

TECH DISRUPTION

Perhaps there’s tech inside the suit that has been compromised by one of the villains. With The Tinkerer in play, perhaps he’s found a way to shut down a lot of the Stark Tech in the suit, which makes it unusable in battle.

VULTURE KNOWS WHO HE IS

Perhaps The Vulture figured out that Spider-Man is Peter Parker. As we see here, both are portrayed to be on the beach together at the same time. It seems as if The Vulture has directly targeted him. Whether he’s in his suit or not it almost a moot point in this example, its’ more the fact that Vulture is looking directly at Peter Parker’s face.

Of course, it’s also entirely possible that Vulture was just attacking the beach where Parker happened to be and Peter is now having to hide his powers since he’s without his mask.

Again, we are 100% aware that all of this is an absolute stretch, total speculation and entirely based in something we might not even be seeing correctly: more than likely, we are seeing something here that isn’t here. It’s more than likely something very easily explained away, but on the off chance that our assumptions have the slightest veracity, we had to take the deep dive down the rabbit hole to see if we could figure out why.

At the very least, we have a Spider-Man movie to get excited about and dissect for the next eight months!
