TIME AFTER TIME Recap and Review for Time Travel Fans: (S01E03 & 04) Out of Time & Secrets Stolen

Hi, time-travel fans. Let’s start this time around by playing a bit of catch-up: there were two characters introduced in episode 2 of Time After Time who bear mentioning as we move forward (and occasionally backward) into episodes 3 and 4. First there’s Griffin, Vanessa’s paramour and a candidate seeking a U.S. Senate seat. Then there’s the guy I thought of in my head as “the tall ginger.” The tall ginger appears to be stalking Wells—though he denies it more or less convincingly when confronted. Of course we later learn that he is indeed stalking both Wells and...

TIME AFTER TIME Recap and Review for Time Travel Fans: (S01E01 & 02) Pilot & I Will Catch You

Time-travel enthusiasts, I beg your forgiveness. Perhaps some of you were hoping the discussion of NBC’s Timeless would continue. (Perhaps only a very few of you.) Instead we will turn our attention to ABC’s mid-season replacement series Time After Time, adapted from the 1979 film of the same name. I beg your indulgence, folks, but it seemed to me that the discussion of Timeless was spinning its wheels. My fault, I’m sure, but I couldn’t help but think that I was repeating myself. NBC’s time-travel series remains compelling yet aggravating (yes, still watching it) with many of the same...

TIMELESS Recap: (S01E10) The Capture of Benedict Arnold

TIMELESS, Episode 10 (“The Capture of Benedict Arnold”). A Review for Time-Travel Fans (SPOILERS!!) Last week I lectured the creators of Timeless, giving them a stern warning. This week, they are getting gold stars and seats at the head of the class. With only a few minor issues to discuss, this was by far the best episode of the show yet. I watched it twice. I’m genuinely excited for upcoming episodes. This is what network shows do, of course, putting all their effort into the last episode before the mid-season break, so I’m aware that I’m being manipulated a...

TIMELESS Recap: (S01E09) The Last Ride of Bonnie & Clyde

TIMELESS, Episode 9 (“The Last Ride of Bonnie & Clyde”) – A Review for Time-Travel Fans (SPOILERS!!) Agent Denise Christopher of the NCTC gets a bigger role to play in Episode 9 of NBC’s Timeless, and with that in mind, I’d like to take a moment to consider a time-travel conundrum involving those who do not time-travel. Every time our heroes return to the present, history has been altered to varying degrees. But to those in the present, it’s just history. So imagine you’re Christopher, and you’re debriefing Lucy, Rufus and Logan after they return from Civil War-era Washington,...

TIMELESS Recap: (S01E08) Space Race

TIMELESS, Episode 8 “Space Race” – A Review for Time-Travel Fans (SPOILERS!!) Episode 8 of NBC’s Timeless may be my favorite yet. But before we discuss the specifics, I think we need to review some things about how time-travel works on the show, and revisit some core TT principles at play in the show, and a question or two that have gone unanswered for a bit too long. 1) We are coming to understand that the only paradoxes possible on the show are those of memory, e.g. Lucy remembers having a sister but because of historic events having been...

TIMELESS Recaps: (S01E06 and E07) The Watergate Tape & Stranded

TIMELESS, Episodes 6+7 (“The Watergate Tape” and “Stranded”). A Review for Time-Travel Fans (SPOILERS!!) Fellow time-travel obsessives, I’m not gonna lie: the election results hit me like a ton of bricks. But my depression (and my lack of a time machine that I could use to go back and take us out of the Darkest Timeline) is not the reason I did not post to Geek Girl Authority after the November 14 broadcast of Timeless. After watching episode 6, “The Watergate Tape,” I realized that it was really ‘part one’ of a kind of two-parter, and I figured that...

Timeless Recap: (S01E05) “The Alamo”

TIMELESS, Episode 5 (“The Alamo”) – A Review for Time-Travel Fans (SPOILERS!!) First of all, a recent revelation I’d like to share with you: At the end of every episode of Timeless, our heroes are always having to explain to Mason, Agent Christopher, and everyone else in time-travel HQ what was different about the timeline before they went on their latest mission and changed history (again). So if I were them, I’d insist on bringing a rough copy of Wikipedia or some other reference guide with me into the time machine, so that when I come out back in...

Timeless Recap: (S01E04) “Party at Castle Varlar”

Timeless Recap: (S01E04) “Party at Castle Varlar”- A Review for Time-Travel Fans (SPOILERS!!) I think I can actually keep this short this week. Basically it’s James Bond and Nazis, with Indy Jones undertones. In the present, we get answers to some of the time-travel questions that have been bugging me thus far. I mean, maybe you don’t care how Logan, Rufus and Lucy get geared up in period wardrobe for every trip, but it’s good to know that billionaire Mason has a warehouse-size storeroom at the ready full of racks of clothes for every conceivable historic period. It’s ridiculous,...

Timeless Recap: (S01E03) “Atomic City”

Timeless Recap: (S01E03) “Atomic City” A Review for Time-Travel Fans (SPOILERS!!) Let’s see if I can keep this short this week. Episode 3 of NBC’s Timeless is the first to open in the present day. I’d rather hoped it would, since episode 2 ended with Lucy arriving home in time for her engagement party. Remember how she’s engaged to a man she never met before? Because alternate timelines, and so forth? I was really hoping to watch her deal with the awkwardness of a party full of people she doesn’t know, and pretend to dote on the fiancé-stranger. Instead...

Timeless Recap: (S01E02) “The Assassination of Abraham”

I need to tell you a story before we get into episode 2 of NBC’s Timeless. Not sure it’s important, but it’s relevant. And it may have impacted how I feel about this week’s episode. Last year I put my time-travel obsession to work. My wife’s theater company holds a fundraiser several times annually: a short play festival (with open bar!). There was a 1930s theme, so I wrote a radio play in the period style, modeled after Flash Gordon-type sci-fi serials for kids. Remember I mentioned Voyagers! last week? I stole that premise and wrote “The Time Fixers”:...
