GAME OF THRONES Season Finale Recap: (S07E07) The Dragon and the Wolf

My colleague, Kimberly Pierce, and I alternated weeks recapping Game of Thrones this season. I did this final season seven recap, so she’ll “face off” with her take in a separate post. (Get it? Like with FACE MAGIC.)  Daaaaaaaaaang! If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, tonight you got SERVED. Let me start by apologizing to the writers for my extreme doubt about what they were up to with the Stark sisters last week. It’s true that you’ve disappointed me in the past, but you made all the way up for it tonight.  A few important points in case...

Facing Off: GAME OF THRONES (S07E06) Beyond the Wall

My colleague, Kimberly Pierce, and I are alternating weeks recapping Game of Thrones this season. On our off weeks, though, we still have something to say. She did the recap this week, so I’m facing off with her (Get it? Like with FACE MAGIC.) by chiming in with my two cents here… Arya (Maisie Williams) and Sansa (Sophie Turner) were never close. They saw the world completely differently, with Arya believing that the rules were wrong and Sansa believing that the rules would carry her to where she wanted to go. Arya’s worldview made her the woman she is now, and...

GAME OF THRONES Recap: (S07E06) Beyond the Wall

My colleague, Leona Laurie, and I are alternating weeks recapping Game of Thrones this season. On our off weeks, though, we still have something to say.  Game of Thrones opens where we left off. Our fellowship of intrepid soldiers continue ever farther beyond the wall. The mood is tenuous as the men slowly feel each other out. While they walk and talk, the conversations jump between Gendry (Joe Dempsie) and the Hound (Rory McCann), Jon (Kit Harington) and Ser Jorah (Iain Glen) and Jon and Tormund (Kristofer Hivju). Few of the men know each other, and even fewer trust...

GAME OF THRONES Theory: Jaime Lannister is the Valonqar AND…

…he will fulfill Maggy the Frog’s prophecy for Cersei AFTER becoming a WHITE WALKER! SPOILERS AHEAD! USE CAUTION! * * * * * * There are a lot of theories circulating about who the “valonqar” is in Maggy’s prophecy about how Cersei (Lena Headey) will die. The portion of the prophecy that mentions this isn’t included in the show, so if you haven’t read the books here’s what you missed: Cersei: Will the king and I have children? Maggy: Oh, aye. Six-and-ten for him, and three for you. Gold shall be their crowns and gold their shrouds, she said....

GAME OF THRONES Recap: (S07E05) Eastwatch

My colleague, Kimberly Pierce, and I are alternating weeks recapping Game of Thrones this season. I did the recap this week, so she’ll “face off” with her take in a separate post. (Get it? Like with FACE MAGIC.)  OH. MY. Game of Thrones. I love how little time this season wastes between bombshell moments, and episode five, “Eastwatch,” maintained such a dizzying pace with big bombs that one of the most significant ones almost slipped under the radar because it was delivered quickly and quietly.  The episode opens with confirmation that it’s Bronn (Jerome Flynn) who has indeed saved Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) from...

Facing Off: GAME OF THRONES (S07E04) The Spoils of War

My colleague, Kimberly Pierce, and I are alternating weeks recapping Game of Thrones this season. On our off weeks, though, we still have something to say. She did the recap this week, so I’m facing off with her (Get it? Like with FACE MAGIC.) by chiming in with my two cents here… Let’s talk about Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) and the dagger he gives Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright). Game of Thrones has so much going on that it’s hard to remember everything that happened in the now-distant past, but this scene was one of the ones in “The Spoils of War”...

GAME OF THRONES Recap: The Spoils of War (S07E04)

My colleague, Leona Laurie, and I are alternating weeks recapping Game of Thrones this season. On our off weeks, though, we still have something to say.  Game of Thrones opens on a marching army. Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) opens the back of a wagon and tosses his friend Bronn (Jerome Flynn) a bag loaded with gold. While they’re riding a wave of victory, the Kingslayer seems moody. The two men squabble lightly. It turns out, Bronn wants a reward. He wants another castle. Could he take High Garden? Nah, he wouldn’t want that one. Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) could come...

Facing Off: GAME OF THRONES Recap (S07E03) The Queen’s Justice

My colleague, Leona Laurie, and I are alternating weeks recapping Game of Thrones this season. On our off weeks, though, we still have something to say. She did the recap this week, so I’m facing off with her (Get it? Like with FACE MAGIC.) by chiming in with my two cents here… Well, let’s start with… there’s going to be spoilers, here. Be warned.  The creative team behind Game of Thrones doesn’t shy away from burning up story, and this week proved no different. There is so much going on this year, that they even find themselves condensing battle sequences....

GAME OF THRONES Recap: (S07E03) The Queen’s Justice

I’d say the theme of season seven of Game of Thrones, at least so far, is “let’s not waste any time here.” Tonight’s episode, “The Queen’s Justice,” was full of moments of satisfaction after long waits and some almost instant gratification.  Like both of its predecessors in this season, this episode opened with the answer to the question we collectively cared about the most. In this case, will sparks (literal or figurative) fly when Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) finally meet? They kind of did! Jon and Davos disembark from a rapid sea voyage, proving once again that travel time in Westeros...

Facing Off: GAME OF THRONES (S07E02) Stormborn

My colleague, Kimberly Pierce, and I are alternating weeks recapping Game of Thrones this season. On our off weeks, though, we still have something to say. She did the recap this week, so I’m facing off with her (Get it? Like with FACE MAGIC.) by chiming in with my two cents here… Do I need to warn that there are spoilers ahead? There are! This week marks the second time in a row that season seven of Game of Thrones has exceeded my expectations. Beforehand, I was nervous about whether they could build on last week’s satisfying explosion of a...
