Johnny Depp to Star in the Fantastic Beasts Sequel

Deadline reports that Johnny Depp is joining the cast of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.  Word is he will co-star opposite of Eddie Redmayne‘s Newt Scamander, but no hint on who he will portray. With Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opening on November 18, maybe Depp will appear in a small cameo in the first film with his character taking on a bigger role in the next.  Although, there will be four total sequels so maybe Depp won’t appear until much later in the series. I have serious reservations about this.  Once upon a time I would...

Movie Review- MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS

When are remakes necessary? This is a question which remains a popular one as Hollywood continues to suffer from a relatively nasty case of remake-itis. When can a film be remade, and when should a movie be left well enough alone? This is an interesting question to say the least. Murder on the Orient Express is a fascinating film through which to explore the question of remakes. How does the stylish mystery live-up to the many previous retellings of the story?  Murder on the Orient Express is a retelling if the classic Agatha Christie novel. The story follows legendary detective...

Gore Verbinski Rumored to Be the New Director for Channing Tatum’s GAMBIT

Pirates of the Caribbean. The Ring. Rango. A Cure for Wellness. The films of Gore Verbinski. And why are we bringing this up right now? Because, in an exclusive out of Deadline, we have the news that Mr. Verbinski is “making a deal” to direct the X-Men spinoff film, Gambit. It’s been a troubled production since its inception, having gone through at least two directors including Doug Liman. The film has been without a director for the better part of this year, with Verbinski being the first director named to the project since Liman’s departure. While, yes, he is...

The Best Halloween Movies of the ’90s

Halloween is, undoubtedly, the most wonderful time of the year. Let there be no protest – you know this to be true. When the clock strikes 12 on October 1st, I immediately transform into a witch. Specifically, a Gothic witch who travels back in time to the ’90s. Does my affinity for ’90s Halloween movies stem from the fact I grew up in that decade? Most likely. However, another potential reason is because they’re the best representations of the spirit of the season. Again, this brooks no argument since, deep down, you know the truth is very…true.  Now, I’ve compiled...

We May Have Learned the Victim in New MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS Trailer

Murder on the Orient Express‘ latest trailer has given us further clues. While an even shorter trailer than the original, we get to know a little more about the detective investigating the murder. Not only that, we are hinted heavily at who the victim of the murder actually is. Mysterious and paranoia are rampant! The most notable thing about this trailer is the introduction to Johnny Depp‘s character. Known as “The Gangster”, we see him interacting with Kenneth Branagh‘s Hercule Poirot, the greatest detective alive. Also apparently known as the “avenger of the innocent”, Poirot is dedicated to finding...

Marvel Us Podcast Ep 7 – HULK (2003)

I, Tom Laurie, and my sister, Leona Laurie, are (re)watching every Marvel movie so we can cheerfully and critically discuss them. In what is indisputably our most anguished episode, we’re talking about Hulk.  In episode 7 of Marvel Us, my sister and I rehash Hulk, the bouncy Ang Lee monster escapade. I enrich this exercise by sharing facts and trivia about the film. There is humor. You will enjoy this. Here are some points of interest: The Hulk character is based on Frankenstein’s monster and Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde. This mess started development in 1990! Ang Lee’s wife is a microbiologist....

Movie Review – IT COMES AT NIGHT

AND THE DAYTIME ISN’T ALL THAT PLEASANT EITHER It Comes at Night by Paul Preston The Movie Guys It’s time to start paying attention to everything Joel Edgerton does. The Aussie actor/director/producer has appeared in many, many good projects and if you’re not familiar with them allow me to refresh: Loving, Midnight Special, Warrior, Zero Dark Thirty, Animal Kingdom plus Black Mass (where he was equally as good as, if not better than, Johnny Depp), The Gift (which he also wrote and directed) and the underseen but effective western Jane Got a Gun. Even in films that weren’t universally loved like The Great Gatsby, Edgerton was memorable. I...
